Easy Dip Recipe

The first time making this mexican dip recipe I was amazed at what a great appetizer it made, while having minimal and easy clean up. It’s a good choice for beginners or letting teens get involved making their first dishes for the family.

Steps to Layer the Dip

  1. Cook the ground beef and season with taco seasoning of choice (or make your own with the recipe below)
  2. In a baking dish, layer the sour cream, salsa, cooked ground beef, and the cups of cheese, in this order
  3. Bake at 350° until hot, remove from oven
  4. Sprinkle with any garnishes of your choosing and serve with tortilla chips.

Texas Dip Substitutions and Additions

  • Great additions to your dip include green chiles, black olives, diced tomato, or pico de gallo
  • Substitute softened cream cheese for the sour cream, for a different type of creaminess
  • Additional layers can be made with a can of regular refried beans or refried black beans
  • Any Mexican cheese blend may be used, or you can make your own blend with whatever cheeses you have on hand
  • For a real Texas twist, throw this creamy dip in the barbecue smoker instead of an oven. Smoke until heated throughout.

When To Make Texas Taco Dip

This cheesy Texas trash dip is a great start to holiday meals when loved ones gather, cinco de mayo,  family game night, cuddling up with a good movie, game day gatherings, football season or anytime you need the perfect appetizer.

Can I Prep This Dip Ahead Of Time?

Yes, you can cook the taco meat mixture, spread out all of the layers and top with cheese, then saran wrap and transport to the party. You’ll need to bake at 350° for about 30-40 minutes, depending on the size of your oven-safe dish.

Do I Have To Use Packaged Taco Seasoning?

No, (and I never do either).  I season the meat liberally with the traditional spices in taco seasoning (given below). You can add 1 tablespoon of water to make it more saucy if you prefer. Layer dip as the usual instructions.

Make Your Own Taco Seasoning Mix With:

  • chili powder
  • cumin
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • black pepper
  • salt, to taste

There is no need to measure these spices out, just cook the ground beef and drain well. Sprinkle these spices over the ground beef and then season well with salt. Taste the meat mixture before layering the dip to make sure it has enough salt and spices.

Texas dip is always a crowd pleaser at parties and holidays. Make this easy Texas Dip with lots of gooey cheese for your next party!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning (or make your own, see notes)
  • 1 1/2 cups salsa, a jar is fine
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 8 oz. bag of shredded Mexican cheese blend (or 2 cups cheese of choice)
  • 1 medium sized baking dish or crock, oven-safe

To Serve

  • Diced jalapenos
  • 1 bag favorite tortilla chips
  • If desired, sprinkle with fresh cilantro or green onion

Instructions

In a saute pan, heat the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until brown. Drain well of grease and return to the pan.

Add in taco seasonings and 1 tablespoon of water, simmer to combine, and taste for seasoning. Take the taco meat off the heat and allow to cool slightly while you layer the rest of the ingredients.

Preheat the oven to 350° F.

In the oven-safe dish layer first the sour cream, then the salsa, then the cooked taco meat mixture, and top with shredded cheese.

Bake in a 350° oven for about 20 minutes, or until the dip is hot and cheese is melted.

Remove from oven and top with any garnishes of your choice, serve with tortilla chips. Be careful serving as the dish will still be hot.

Notes

Save leftovers in an airtight container (fully cooled) for up to 2 days. Reheat leftover dip gently in the microwave until warm.

Taco Seasoning can be made at home with just a few simple ingredients. Combine chili powder, garlic and onion powder, cumin, black pepper, and a little salt to the meat and season to taste.
